💧Tree watering has started! Can you help?

Plants and insects form the foundation of a healthy ecosystem, which faces significant challenges in urban settings. Noticing these often-overlooked organisms is the first step toward caring for our natural world.

🌼 New: Snowdrops, crocus, chionodoxa, and daffodils planted by H&F Council
Thanks to H&F Parks department for planting over 1,000 bulbs along the principal avenue in late 2025, making their first appearance in Spring 2026
Spring flowering bulbs are an important source of food for pollinators like bumblebees in early spring.
Bluebells are abundant throughout the cemetery - blue, white, and purple. The best time to enjoy them is during April. The cemetery has both native bluebells and Spanish bluebells. (How to tell the difference)
Small patches in various locations. Together with crocuses, the earliest harbingers of spring, appearing from the start of February.
Also called glory-of-the-snow. One patch north of the chapel, along Fulham Palace Road. Also a few along the Munster Road avenue and on some graves. More were planted along the principal avenue in winter 2025.
One patch in the northeast of the cemetery, near the WWII war plot, another patch along the north border next to Lillie Rec, and a few other small patches.
Many small patches all around the cemetery, especially to the north and south of the principal avenue, and on some graves. They flower from February to March.
A small patch of Balkan anemones (Anemonoides blanda) grow near the war plot. They flower in early March. Native wood anemones planted along the Munster Road avenue flowered for the first time in March 2026.

In October 2024, funded by Veolia Sustainability Fund, we planted:
150 snowdrops and 150 native bluebell bulbs, together with Year 5 pupils from St John's Walham Green, along the south side of the Munster Rd avenue. Photo album
200 native wood anemones along the north side of the Munster Road area, in 5 areas protected by twig hedges. Photo album
150 daffodil bulbs along the principal avenue.
In Spring 2025 the Friends created 2 new wildflower areas, by the Munster Road Gate, and near the War Memorial.
In late 2025 H&F Council planted over 1,000 new bulbs along both sides of the principal avenue, with snowdrops, crocus, chionodoxa, and daffodils.
Red tulips (best in early April) and salvia (best in May) in the raised beds outside the West gate.
During the summer months (May-September), the council Parks department lets the grass in areas of the cemetery grow long. By doing this they are:
Increasing biodiversity
Providing habitat for insects, such as butterflies, and other wildlife
Reducing CO2 emissions
Promoting sustainable landscaping
Paths are mowed to open up areas for walkers and allow access to graves.

We are working with the council Parks department to hopefully increase these areas in future years.
In Spring 2025 the Friends created 2 new wildflower areas to benefit pollinators. We removed existing grass, bramble, and ivy to reduce competition, and sowed 2 different native wildflower mixes. We will be observing the results over the years ahead to learn and improve.
